I don’t think I understand what you mean by your last paragraph and I have

A slightly different take on the University presidents’ terrible responses. I think they had each been coached to not let the inquisitor back them into a corner where the inquisitor can say “you say this now, but did that then”, or create inflexibility for the university to react in the future.

So their answer was a dance around an answer instead of saying very bluntly “well, an actual call for the genocide of any group of people would be a violation of our policies”.
