I think Israel’s (Netanyahu’s, specifically) greatest sin here was to


Materially support Hamas to keep the Palestinians divided. A cynical move meant to keep Palestinian refugees marginalized.

Peace is not going to be imminent now. Even if they end their retaliation now, they’re up against Isis like forces (Hamas and Iran/Hezbollah) which will only see it as an invitation for future 10/7’s. Everything you read - even the peaciest of the Israeli peaceniks don’t think coexistence with Hamas is an option any longer. I doubt there’s any appetite in Israel at all for leaving them in charge in Gaza.

So, at this point, peace is really not in the cards, no matter what Israel does. Security is taking precedence, as it would in any country in the world in their shoes.
