Whether he comes across as moderate the next time he runs for office will probably depend on who he is running against.

What I am confident of is this. Had the GOP nominee in 2021 been someone like Cuccinelli, he would have played the CRT hand every bit as much as Youngkin did and almost certainly much more. And he would have lost in a landslide. In my opinion, Youngkin's win reflected votes against ideological extremism, not votes for it.

It is only possible to know the true motives of one voter. I am a statistically irrelevant sample, of course, but I voted for Youngkin because I felt we should pull back from the divisiveness of the Northrum years. I would never under any circumstances have voted for Cuccinelli or anyone like him. And I actually liked Terry McAuliffe and thought he did a good job as governor. I voted against him because of the direction his party had taken since then and because Youngkin offered (in my opinion) a reasonable, moderate, intelligent alternative.

If I ever have the chance to vote for Youngkin again, I don't know whether I will or not. Depends on what the alternatives are. I do think his win was something that should have sent a clear message to both parties and that they should learn from it. Did it and have they? Probably not.
