I think, and thought at the time, that Nixon should have faced legal

consequences after his resignation. I think it would have been an additional deterrent to bad presidential behavior, a clear signal that Presidents are not above the law.

Let's face it. The main reasons Nixon resigned were that Republican leadership demanded it and he would most definitely faced the humiliation of impeachment and removal from office. However, that was not a sufficient deterrent. Trump is absolutely not deterred, even by defeat at the polls. Of course, Nixon, unlike Trump, was not completely without honor, dignity, and respect for the office.

Nixon's pardon was both a bad idea and a political liability for Gerald Ford.
