As for speed of processing, IDK, a student with enough time can figure out quite a lot of problems with brute force unless there are literally unfamiliar vocabulary terms. I was notorious for reverse engineering algorithms for math league and SAT questions and since I could work fairly quickly, I could fake being excellent at math. It doesn't work for the vocabulary part of the SAT verbal, but it does work fairly well for the reading comprehension. No one has ever explained to me how having memorized the meaning of obscure words was an indicator of aptitude.

And yes, unpaid internships are an absolute boon to the connected.
