I'm guessing well-to-do exurbs have the cushiest police jobs

Doubt people are fleeing cites to be rural cops, honestly. To your point, the depression, prevalence of guns, drug use and associated crime is something we rarely discuss here but are facts of life. It's not like Andy Griffith and Mayberry.
