The counterculture (“hippie”) movement of the 60s got a lot of attention
then because it pushed back against accepted norms. It came to define our generation in the eyes of many because of that attention. But a lot of us boomers, probably the majority, weren’t part of that movement. Sure we participated superficially by the way we dressed, the music we listened to, and the length of our hair, but for most of us that was just a manifestation of normal teenage rebellion. Hell, I voted for Nixon in my first election and again in ‘76! Fifty years (and Bob Dole in ‘96, the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of my politics) seems to have cured the folly of that misguided world view.
