As a progressive boomer, I think we were never in the majority, but we were
In the majority of boomers who were engaged at all.
That is, we were a pretty significant majority of the minority who cared.
When Reagan came in in the 1980 election I think the majority of my generation (I was 27 that Election Day) showed themselves for the first time. And that’s traditionally around the age when the majority of people begin expressing themselves politically.
There’s also some truth in the idea that many were anti-war, but not sold on the rest of the Movement.
Sometimes I also wonder if I would have developed as much of a sensitivity and aversion to racism if I hadn’t been lucky enough to have sufficient athletic talent to play sports year-round on teams that were integrated, if I didn’t work and sweat and laugh and get yelled at by the coaches, and joke and ride buses to and from games with black kids. Not enough talent to play at a Division 1 college level , but enough to gain that very fortunate bit of experience at an early age.
