Interesting that in the '76 tourney UNC had a bye. USC had departed just

four or five years earlier. GT wasn't in yet. The other interesting thing, and maybe this is one reason the ACC tourney doesn't have the cachet any more, was that only two teams from a conference could go to the NCAA. UNC was in due to the 1st place regular season finish. UVA stole the champion spot. NCSU and Maryland (who had a damned good team with All American John Lucas) both went home.

That made the ACC tournament outcome MUCH more important.
