Venmo is just the payment processor, so there's no exception in place for

them. They're not paying a vendor or subcontractor here.

Before this the payer still had to report a 1099 for the payee for anything over $600 whether they paid them by Venmo, crypto, check, credit card, cash or whatever. If as a business I pay that vendor or subcontractor $600 by check, I still have to file a 1099, but the bank doesn't report it. Nor does MC or Visa if I pay by those. Venmo (and other payment processors) now does.

That's part of why I say it's not worth the "squeeze". If as a business I'm willing to ignore laws for filing 1099's, I'll be just as willing to do so by paying by check or CC. And if I'm so paranoid about that "paper trail" being found, I may turn to crypto.

In addition, I find it a bit ironic that the same folks pushing or defending this, are the same folks that when you dare talk about cutting spending are the first to say it's just a "rounding error" on our total budget, so don't bother with the "squeeze".

I could actually see some benefit to this if they actually allowed businesses to not file 1099's if they pay via Venmo, but I doubt that's the case, and that would be a big benefit to Venmo vs banks, CC companies, etc.
