Which ones? I'm genuinely interested in a debate about
policy instead of just calling people idiots. I'll go first.
Mostly disagree:
1) Reversing the corporate tax cut is stupid and will make our corporate tax rate significantly higher than the rest of the world and once again incentivize companies to reinvest foreign profits overseas instead of repatriating the cash for investment in the US. But our corporate tax code was uncompetitive for decades... this position from democrat could hardly be considered shocking
2) Minimum wages are stupid. The fact that 1% of wage earners make the current minimum wage tells you that there are factors other than gov't mandates that determine wages for the vast majority of workers. But again, a democrat proposing a minimum wage is hardly shocking. I think the $15 min wage will be a non factor for most of this country. Will create some business hardship in lower cost parts of the country
3) Several months of broad paid leave. Umm, I don't think "broad" is the preferred nomenclature .... how about paid maternity leave :-). But seriously, this is something the gov't doesn't really need to get involved in. My company's leave policy is extremely generous (too generous imo). If you want better leave, find a better job, make yourself more valuable to employers.
3) Expand the EITC...if we just accept the fact that we're going to have half the country that has no tax liability I suppose this is OK. I honestly don't know how a family gets by on $30K per year to begin with so I can only get too upset about them getting a little more. Again, hardly a surprising position for a dem.
4) Students shouldn't have to take on debt to attend college... why not? There's no college fairy. Students shouldn't have to take on a mortgage sized amount of debt to attend college, but no one has to do that today. Vehemently disagree on this one, but it is a standard dem position and is a play for the dopey college kid vote
5) Boost teacher pay. why? Is there a huge shortage of teachers I'm not aware of? No one gets rich teaching, but it's not a terrible gig either with the hours, time off, and pension.
6) Refundable tax credits for families making up to $100K. Too expensive
7) Affordable housing tax credits... again, too many tax credits, they'll never be able to pay for this
8) Abortion limits, few if any. I struggle here. I support women's reproductive rights, but we need restrictions on on demand abortion after the first trimester. But again, hardly a shocking position for a democrat
Agree/Mostly agree:
1) Abolish capital punishment. Yep.
2) Abolish private prison... strongly agree. just a disturbing potential for conflict of interest
3) Abolish mandatory sentences... again, strongly agree. This can yield stupid results that even prosecutors don't like
4) Reform or abolish cash bail... on board with reforming for non violent criminals
5) cocaine sentencing disparities... sure
6) Assault weapons ban/background checks... yep
7 Drug prices... on board with importation, not on board with patent breaking
8) ACA/coverage expansion: I'm on board with medicare for all that coexists with private / premium plans/options
9) Slash defense spending: Amen. We don't need to outspend the next 10 countries combined on defense.
10) Bring troops home: Amen
Everything else is either meh, or I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other... or I just ran out of steam.
Which ones do you consider shocking?
