Avoiding massive deficits is always a concern. But fir some time now
Republicans have been worse at that than democrats when adjustments are made for the effects of deep recessions.
It also matters what is driving the deficit. Is the spending worthwhile? If it goes to important infrastructure or programs that improve our productive capacity or human capital, it should pay dividends down the road.
And then there are certain problems requiring government involvement (such as climate change or ensuring programs providing elderly with healthcare and basic assistance are solvent). The ROI is more complicated but doing nothing has major drawbacks too (financial and otherwise).
Trump has kicked the can down the road on so much that a Biden admin will have a lot of cleanup to do. I’m sure the GOP will do is best to blame Biden for costs related to some of that cleanup.
