Very, very much so
A private server entitles you to all the original email files and to leave ports open through incompetence. It allows you to scrub history with the push of a button and the strength of a couple axe swings.
Private email just means you have an account through another provider who stores and backs up all emails and runs security checks to protect open security holes. Still not what I would consider safe, but not as glaringly stupid as having your own server.
