The reason is obvious. By owning the server she owns much of history.
Of course some would be recoverable by searching every email coming in to the government system but anything going to anybody else would not be.
I asked an historian/author friend of mine what she thought about the email fiasco and her first reaction was that only Fox cares. Then I asked her what she would think if in five years she wanted to write the history of the State Department under Clinton and Clinton's emails were gone. She never answered.
Clinton wants to leave no record of her actions. It's not about convenience or having to carry two phones. It's not about yoga routines. It's about leaving no record of her interactions as Secretary of State with the world outside of government (Blumenthal, Clinton Foundation, etc). She wanted to play the role of Soviet historian and erase things from history. I have as big or bigger problem with this angle than I do the security implications.
