If you define "status quo as promoting free trade in general over
protectionist policies, you bet that I think it makes us far better off as a country in multiple ways than the alternatives. Special Chinese tariffs, rolling back NAFTA, killing TPP - these things will only hurt us in my opinion. Many were absolutely convinced to the core that Smoot-Hawley was the way to spark economic growth and in this country.
You mention other things -- an overreaching government, tax structures that seem questionable, especially in light of comparative changes going on in the rest of the world. These are different subjects and I am not promoting status quo in many of these areas. However, the populism winning the day today tends to lump every subject together into one big ball of anger. This is dangerous and can easily result in policies that can be far worse than the status quo.
