Alito seemed to go down a path that we should give a president
Immunity to discourage him from causing a coup. In other words, make him immune to crimes so that he doesn’t cause a crime. He didn’t say that explicitly, but said won’t that “lead us into a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country as a democracy?”
This wasn’t an issue for our entire history, but now Alito seems to be proactively looking for justification to make the President above the law. (Add to this the deliberate delays which may enable The case to be delayed until after Trump is elected President).
I don’t know where this will go, but we are closer to an autocracy than many people think. I don’t think my view is hyperbole. A majority of the SC is seriously considering an authoritarian structure.
