Certainly the polling doesn't indicate that if you read the article, though I think there's still an opportunity to paint RFK in a different light that the Dems haven't fully pursued yet. Ads with his family attacking him could change the view of liberals pretty quickly. I wouldn't rule it out in the long run, but clearly Trump and company don't think that's where things are right now.

If you figure that Trump supporters like RFK but are committed to Trump then he wouldn't draw away many Trump votes. It's the marginal independents who may disapprove of Trump so that they'll never vote for him but don't really want to vote for Biden either that are in play. If you give them a binary choice, they probably go for Biden, but if you give them a protest option they go that route instead. We saw this in 2016 with both the far left crowd and Jill Stein (she's on the ballot again, as is Cornel West) and the moderates with Johnson.

As far as saving democracy goes, giving people options sounds great until you realize our electoral system is completely built around binary choices. Run the 2016 election with a ranked choice voting system and Clinton probably wins. The same thing holds true here. Giving people a way to waste their vote isn't actually promoting democracy because you wind up with the less favored candidates winning.
