He’s charted his own best course. The far right is reacting to his states’ rights confirmation. He said he’s not interested in a federal measure on abortion. That pisses off the suicide god squad which wants to do god’s bidding on abortion no matter how many elections it costs them. They’ll go to the mat on a fed ban which would piss off that moderate, largely suburban sliver that will swing the election. So, I do think Trump improves his chances with them with this move.

But on the other side, the left will play up all Trump’s bragging about killing Roe for all its worth in campaign ads. But if you really think about it, the god squad’s in the bag for Trump. They’re going to vote for him, and probably count on the fact that Trump’s word is certainly not his bond. I think the left will try to remind pro-choicers of that too, but this is Trump’s best course.

Trump mostly wants this issue pushed as far to the back as possible. I think saying this now is his best option, especially if he can mostly avoid it going forward.
