nobody is getting pregnant in order to flippantly start to think about it at week 38. However, I do think there is a heck of a lot of more gray area regarding how and why some things are done in reality and can continue to happen in the future -- that it is a very reasonable argument to accept that the state can take an interest at some point in a developing fetus before the moment of delivery. Moral societies have always struggled with this balance and there is never going to be some perfect set of rules, but I don't think an attempt to have some societal structure that place some outside restrictions is by definition an affront to a woman's autonomy.

And while I don't think we have to take our cues from other countries and we certainly don't historically on plenty of issues --- it is at least fair to note as hoodeyo commented how many other countries we view as educated and thoughtful have national abortion restrictions and oversight. These are not theocratic countries, especially these days.
