Happy to try to have a rational discourse with anyone. The statement you

quote below is simply as admission of failure to be able win the minds of others - in this case recent immigrants.

The statement implies that either the political ideas are such that you cannot logically reason others to hold them or that the ones who hold those political ideas are so bad at explaining them the cannot logically explain them to others. If one believes in the ideas they espouse and believes they can articulate them well - then they should believe they can reason with others to hold them as well.
