Your first point is likely true. I'd guess that only about 20% of people...


...were like me and got it right from the get-go. Even Trump overreacted. The other 50% of the 70% had to see for itself the entirely predictable destruction wrought by COVID policy run its course before they came to the same conclusion with hindsight.

To your second point, no, the government -- in a supposed free country like America, at least -- does not have the authority to force you to close your business, school or church based on the whims of bureaucrats. It does not have the right to suspend your assembly rights or travel rights. It does not have the right to censor your viewpoint. It does not have the right to destroy your livelihood for refusal to undergo an experimental medical treatment. It does not have the right to prevent your kids from being educated.

That may be the country you want, and maybe the COVID tyranny showed us that that's, in fact, the country we have, but that is not a free country.
