To give Jayapal the “benefit of the doubt” is to ignore her past attempts

to deflect and her need to clarify positions on anti-Semitism and Israel.

In 2019, when the House proposed a resolution to specifically condemn Ilhan Omar’s anti-Semitic remarks (“Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” and “It’s all about the Benjamins baby”) , Jayapal was a leading voice in revising that resolution to gloss over the specific condemnation of anti-Semitism and redirect attention by broadening it to ALL forms of bigotry. This was merely an effort to avoid specifically condemning anti-Semitism and her friend Omar.

This year, at a pro-Palestinian protest rally against the House resolution in support of Israel, Jayapal made the comment that “Israel is a racist state”. She subsequently attempted to walk back that statement as well.

So, when you hear Jayapal once again attempt to “clarify” her statement when she said that rape and sexual violence of innocent Israeli women by Hamas on October 7 should be viewed in the context that war is horrible and this was used a tool of war, giving Jayapal the “ benefit of the doubt” requires one to suffer from amnesia.
