You, and Matt before you, are making me rethink if 15 wks is reasonable

enough. (Matt mentioned 20 wk testing a couple of times)

We actually went through this with my daughter, and were sent to then MCV for advanced genetic testing. Thank goodness she was fine, and has gone on to be a very successful Hoo grad and is well on her way to a successful life that couldn't make her daddy more proud. But it certainly led to her mother and I having some serious discussions before and during the drive up there.

I couldn't recall when we had to go through that advanced testing, but this post made me check, and yes, the advanced testing we went through is indeed still done (now 25 yrs later) at around the 18-20 wk mark. Now I can respect the argument that a child with Trisomy 21 or other abnormalities certainly doesn't meet the threshold of threat to life of the child or mother. I can also respect the argument of suggesting this should fall under a medical exception determination.

Now I do not buy the argument that an abortion decision after that testing would just be "abortion as birth control" (nor is it in the vast, vast majority of cases). But I can also see pitfalls from depending on a medical exception in order to make that very painful decision after a bad advanced testing result. And I'll trust the parents and docs to make that painful decision free of judgement.

Thus, while I still think 12-15 wks is sufficient time for elective abortion, I can see a valid argument to just stretch that to 18-20 wks for the reasons you cite.
