Notre Dame and BYU have always recruited nationally, but most on that list

Have not. Penn State probably the best example — not sure there was a notable player on either of JoePa’s national title teams who wasn’t from PA or a neighboring state like NJ or OH.

Always *some* degree of national recruiting for top kids who could play anywhere they want and solicit a coach like Bear Bryant for a scholarship, but coaches were not looking at algorithms that break down prospects’ strengths, weaknesses and comps and reaching out via social media to kids not even in their geographic footprint until really the last 10 years or so.

They were recruiting by networking with high school coaches in their area, going to practice, etc. And the decisionmaking process for kids was night and day different.
