Easier said than done, but I suggest you not feel neglectful.
It happens for one reason or another in all these cases, I think. We made the horrible decision of institutionalizing my mom for the last 6-8 mths of her life. It’d become untenable for my dad, and we were convinced my mom no longer consistently knew her surroundings, and my dad’s life would have been shortened if we tried to keep her home. He did live another 11 happy (my mom’s absence after a half century aside) years after she passed. So, we made the right decision for all concerned (including my mom imo), but the pangs of guilt survive.
