Because at some point between conception and birth - most people agree that
the fetus / unborn child has rights independent of the mother carrying that child. Some say instant of conception, some might say not until the umbilical cord is cut - but many many people have some sense that its somewhere in between - maybe even a growing development of rights from conception to birth as the fetus grows into a child.
Most people consider it wrong, yes maybe even immoral, to drink excessively or use drugs excessively while pregnant - because of the very likely harm it will cause the growing fetus. Most people would feel differently about a doctor taking out someone's kidney without their consent while they were in surgery vs giving them an abortion without consent while they were in surgery.
We all recognize that there are two lives to consider - at least at some point along the way.
Frankly, the difference between 6 and 15 and 24 and 33 weeks is how close to human we view that fetus / unborn child and, therefore, how much they are deserving of societal protection in their own right.
