Why not 45 mph or 55? Why 21 for alcohol not 22 or 20
Why do we vote at 18, not 16 or 19? Why one mandatory vaccine but not another. Why child safety seats until 8 but not 10 or 7?
Almost all laws are arbitrary at some point. That is part of what compromise is all about.
If the youngest currently viability is somewhere around 20-22 weeks (something like 10% chance of survival at 22 weeks and 40+% at 24 weeks) and one thinks viability has some bearing on the “rights” of the unborn, then a restriction a few weeks before viability could make a lot of logical sense.
