I was just thinking today how awful severely gerrymandered seats are
It’s not just about the quantity of seats, but the quality of who wins it to.
If North Carolina has 11 seats, 7 of which are competitive, your going to have 7 people that need to win independents, and can’t be crazy right or crazy left because they will lose the general election (think Dave Brat losing his seat to Spanberger). Now in the bullshit gerrymandered map, 10 seats are 100% safe outside a Roy Moore situation. In safe seats, the craziest take can win a primary, particularly on the GOP side. So instead of 4 extremes and 7 moderates, gerrymandering creates 10 extremes and one moderate.
As more states gerrymander safe seats for their party, moderates disappear.
This is how you end up with a GOP caucus that is now dominated by election deniers. It helps them in the primary and their general election seats are safe.
This is going to get really bad as these maps start being used. Wisconsin and North Carolina have shown the GOP the way. Democracy is in trouble. Those states have Dem governors and can’t do shit to stop it.
