They were thinking, correctly following WWII, that the Jews needed a
homeland. Lest we pretend that we are so tolerant, the US, Europe and Russia were deeply antisemitic, and given colonial attitudes we didn't give a rat's ass what happened to Arabs living there, just so long as we didn't invite all Jews to live with us. I don't think that's a harsh assessment.
To be clear though, even though Israel is officially a Jewish state, it is not a theocracy (yet), or an autocracy despite Netanyahu's best efforts to make it one. It has been a thriving democracy. But it was also set up with borders that made it almost indefensible, so control of places like the West Bank has been critical. And that control ain't pretty.
I would love to see all Palestinians offered citizenship in Israel, but I can also see why Israel wouldn't want the Jewish state to be diluted and why Palestinians wouldn't want to be a part of it. Hence, the two-state solution appears to be the only workable solution with Jerusalem as an international city to accommodate the three great mythologies who don't seem to get along.
