I find Gaza's infrastructure to be fascinating. Just was reading a WaPo
article about the impending siege and I learned several things I was only vaguely aware of. For example, Gaza has only one diesel operated power plant (65-75 MW daily. Of course, the fuel it must get from Israel. The bulk of it's power though (120 MW daily) direct power transmission, again from Israel. They have some wastewater treatment plants and a desalination plant for drinking water, but they need power to operate and that power mostly comes from Israel. And even before this ill-conceived attack, power was off for half the day every day.
Two million people, living in 140 square miles, completely dependent on their arch-enemy for survival. Who the hell would want to live like that? And for what? Some notion of autonomy from the Jewish state? Given its dependence, how is a two-state solution even viable? I guess it just would require swallowing too much pride on either side to become one state. Yes, I know, the Jewish homeland would be diluted. Yes, I know Muslims would have to live under Israeli law, but presumably with representation in the Knesset.
No wonder this standoff has never been solved.
