I’m cherry picking the absolute fact that downgrades have only happened

Twice, and they have both times happened only because a default effort by repubs was under way. There was no talk of downgrade even during the pandemic, with revenues plummeting and spending skyrocketing. So, you’re sticking with the “just a coincidence” argument. We’ve had all kinds of fiscal difficulties and tensions since ‘08. None of them have led to even talk of a downgrade. Except 1. Default. Both time repubs threatened it.

It is 100% the case that the downgrades can only be about lack of political will. To compromise. It so happens that the dems this year….compromised. And a solution was reached. Not a great one, but a solution.

The repubs proceeded to cancel the House for a week in a temper tantrum over the compromise. And will probably cause shutdowns in the next few months. They are protesting compromise, which is the only path to a fiscal solution.

This is a pure repub problem, and it must be seen as that in order to fix it. The danger is in the denial of that clear fact.
