When I first read this, I assumed it was talking about the hiring out
system, whereby slaves that acquired some skill were at times hired out by their owners. In some cases slaves were able to keep some of their earnings after paying their owner's "their cut", and in some cases those earnings ended up contributing to those slaves buying their freedom or providing resources to escape. Obviously in some cases owners kept all, and the hiring out system had many negative consequences as well
The hiring out system is documented in slave narratives (autobiographical) like 12 years a slave, Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Tubman, among other sources
The wording is poor in the standards, but wanting this to be taught isn't wrong imo. Of course if you use language that even can be (mis)construed to suggest slavery was beneficial to the enslaved (which it obviously was not), be prepared to be attacked.
