It may come down to what's front and center though.
My personal position on abortion is tentatively pro-choice, but I've never bought the "my body my choice" argument. Some of the rhetoric on that and other things is off-putting to a lot of people. The worldview of 'cultural marxism' or whatever you would label it as currently presented rings hollow to many who oppose bullshit like the NC bathroom laws. And I wouldn't automatically assume younger generations will fall tightly in line, as I think there is at least some quantifiable reaction against it. As context, I'm pretty libertarian leaning socially and on the old end of Gen Y.
I guess my point is the Democrats don't have to ditch social issues to win anyone over, but they should be more tolerant (even as the opposition is not). And that it's not a good tip of the spear, especially in a country as religious as the US.
