Trump. Trump would have been far less likely to take the rust belt if Bern were pushing his protectionist agenda. And he would have done that in concert with the core dem social values.

Believe me - I want a centrist message to win out. I hate this far right-left populism. If the Bannon wing of the repub party wins out, protectionism may become a repub message. The dems may become more the party of free markets as it relates to trade. But the dems need to emphasize practical considerations more, and ivory tower cultural issues less. They need to stop sounding holier than thou. That is more important to their future success than specifically where on the political spectrum their economic message ultimately falls.
