The technology that makes self driving cars self driving will work their


way down into all models as crash avoidance safety features. I'd bet in 10 years, rear end accidents will all but disappear. The ability of cars to not only sense surroundings, but also talk to other cars on the road will allow us to eliminate all sorts of other accidents (that's probably farther than 10 years off).

I don't know that we'll get to a point where truly driverless cars are ubiquitous anytime soon, but the technology behind driverless cars will / should allow us to dramatically reduce traffic accidents.
