Even greater irony: The suggestion here seems to be...

that we need to make drugs legal to get them out of the black market in order to reduce gun violence, but at the same time, we need to reduce gun violence by making them illegal (or at least increasing the legal restrictions), thus pushing gun sales more into the black market.

I think there is a decent chance that decriminalizing drugs, or as many as possible, could take the violence out of the drug trade (at what cost? not sure - dicey business, because once it's legal, hard to make it illegal again). In my mind Pot should certainly be legal.

Increasing restrictions on guns, outlawing semi autos, that kind of thing. We sure that would help? Why do we think such a "War on Guns" will be any more successful than a War on Drugs? Somebody who really wants to get their hands on a semi-auto, even if they were illegal nationwide - anyone really think that would be harder to get than cocaine or heroine is today?
