I've started reading some Bageant too, actually.

His book is about the town where I grew up so kinda have to.

But Bageant aside, I can tell you first hand the people I know who are most likely to watch "cops" and cheer as the black guy gets thrown head first into the side of the paddy wagon tend to be lower income white folks. I think there is a bit of a "pecking order" thing going on and always has been that goes back to your boy Tricky Dick and continued with Ronald Reagan.

No lie, I've heard more than a handful of fine folks in from over the mountains refer to the DC nightly news as the "N---- News" One of my dad's friends in particular you'd think the only reason he watches the nightly news is for confirmation bias. Certainly doesn't seem to be opposed to Southeast DC being treated like a police state, but owns an arsenal of guns and a "don't tread on me" sticker on his truck...
