All very true (albeit sad) with one caveat...

A lot of people who are themselves poor or damn close to it (many on public assistance of some kind) are the most vocal supporters of this stuff. The Southern Strategy is as alive well and effective as it's ever been.

Classic scapegoating and I've seen it first hand from people I grew up with and even my own family members. Most notably my uncle -- a lifelong "taker" who has been on union disability leave and hasn't worked a day since the early 80's, pilfered my working class grandfather's savings when he was old and suffering from Alzheimer's so he could buy a damn sports car, and has the nerve to come over and spout off about all the welfare-collecting *insert racial epithets here* taking his tax dollars so they can have twelve kids to text on their ObamaPhones....

Sad, maddening, disgusting, but a bill of goods that a lot of people buy.
