On the Democratic side, that is exactly it. If Obama could run for a third


term it would have looked a lot like the 2012 primary.

On the GOP side, I do think they are finally reaping what they've sown in the culture wars with a voter base that is finally figuring out their platform of "cut taxes, deregulate business, build lots of tanks and warplanes, and be ready to die for Israel" does little if anything to serve their interests. They had a few candidates that, IMHO at least, were no better or worse than Romney or McCain but just couldn't sell any of them this time around and got completely blindsided by a charlatan who was willing to buck the establishment party line and go all in on faux-pas-pulism (economic populism blended with proud ugly Americanism, racism, and xenophobia) and that is exactly what their "base" has been screaming for. Now they've got a problem on their hands.
