That is an interesting exit poll. Among "very conservative" Trump lost

and only 8% said they supported Trump because "he shares my values."

Trump did better among independents than among Republicans in South Carolina.

Trump won South Carolina largely because he voters believed him when he said he "tells it like it is" and that he is an outsider. They were also swayed by his call to keep Muslims out of the country.

The other factors was education level -- the less educated people were, the more likely they were to support Trump. I think that also explains why so many of his supporters accepted at face value that he "tells it like it is" and that he is an outsider -- they believed the campaign rhetoric and were swayed by his presence and knew too little about Trump's past to question his claims.

It will be interesting to see if a conservative runs a third-party race, and if so, the reaction.
