The Carter campaign is also an interesting point of comparison

The party establishment hated Jimmy Carter, but they fell in line with him after his nomination (after their desperate attempts to derail it failed) and he helped smooth the ruffled feathers by choosing Walter Mondale as his VP.

So while there is precedent for a maverick winning the nomination against the wishes of the party establishment, there is none for rejecting him once chosen (unless you go back to 1860).

Carter came on the scene as respectable anti-establishment candidate, capturing voters who couldn't stomach George Wallace.

It's a near certainty that someone will try to be a more respectable (and therefore more electable) version of Donald Trump in the next election. I expect the populist uprising will be defeated this time, but will carry the day in 2020, with a candidate more palatable than Trump/Sanders.
