It was set up perfectly for Trump. Incredibly large field and anger/disdain

None of the other 16 candidates would have started with more than 15% even if Trump wasn't in the race . So in comes the loud, well-known outsider who immediately captures 20-25% and the field was too big for anyone else to get a plurality. And then he immediately went after his biggest threat Jeb and kept him in single digits. He was dealt a good hand and he played it perfectly.
