I have similar experiences - I have a fake niece (best friend’s 30ish
Daughter) who is transitioning to a man or “no gender” (not clear), who is Jewish herself, who actively joins in “River to sea chants”. I give my buddy some props - he’s patient with her. His wife has none. She’s seemingly unaware of what her vision (she’s still a “she” for the time being) of a Hamas controlled Palestine would mean for people like her. My sister’s daughter is similar, but not at actual protests like my buddy’s (she’s not transgender FTR).
Both of these kids are ardent social Justice warriors in the US. It’s lost on them that the “River to sea” envisioned even by the hard right in Israel would be a diverse nation of many religions with freedom to practice, and where lgbtq rights are protected. Not that the hard right wouldn’t want an intolerant state, but the Israeli democracy would be in the way.
No such obstacles would impede the extremism of Hamas’ nationalist dream. If these kids actually lived there, they’d be shot on the spot for protesting for freedom of…anything.
Both River to sea visions are wrong, and are, in fact, genocidal dreams. Difference really is, the only thing preventing Hamas from fulfilling its murderous, genocidal vision is the inability to do it. As bill maher said this week, if they could, they wouldn’t hesitate. Israel could do that. It has the power. It doesn’t, because its democracy prevents it. Much of its own population wouldn’t stand for it, and the democracies with which it’s aligned won’t allow it.
That’s the idiocy of these protests. Concern for Palestinians is totally valid. Supporting Hamas or Hezbollah as part of that effort is ignorance on display. And it’s way more prevalent than most lefties want to admit in an election year. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 04/29/2024 10:31AM]
