Today, the "both sides" thing doesn't work, especially regarding foreign
policy. In some ways, it is a similar theme to the political status quo prior to WW2. The GOP leadership was staunchly isolationist. But for FDR, there would not have been anything like Lend Lease or the US Navy convoy protection up to the point of Iceland. Those things were a literal lifeline for Britain, before Pearl Harbor.
That differentiation is even more obvious today. NATO is stronger today than ever, mostly because a Democratic President valued the economic and military agreements that have served to provide prosperity and peace in Europe, achieved at war's end. The GOP candidate for the presidency is no mere isolationist though, he is a Bonafide supporter of Russian aggression and the party that he heads is in full support.
I don't see how the distinction can be any clearer.
