It's incredibly mutually beneficial, which is why I don't get the $ grab

The TA needs to move around 50,000 runners for a few days. Add in the 2,000,000 spectators and the TA is a net receiver of marathon impact money.

I was on a mid-sized marathon board for 10 years. The city would win in many more areas than it would lose, and embraced the marathon because of the net $ benefit and a matter of civic pride; showing off the city and all.

The TA knows the NYC Marathon is not going away. Thus, it can play a bit of hard ball here (having its cake and eating it, too). Seems to me it should consider the overall impact to its bottom line; not just individual line items.
