There’s the narrow slice of voters who will decide the election, and some of them would be at risk. Just as I think Trump already put some of those crucial votes at risk by not debating in the primaries. He wouldn’t lose a single base vote, but that’s not the cohort he needs to be concerned with now.

If Biden refuses to debate, he’ll risk that. But then same holds true with Trump, including if he agrees to debates only under rules he dictates, meaning free-for-all, whereas Biden agrees to rules governing debates since Nixon and Kennedy made them election season televised events.
