Casually. Waiting for it to go away all on its own, because that’s what usually happens, is whistling past the graveyard; it’s repeating almost exactly the way the Republican Party ultimately became Trumpistan. We now know that’s not a swinging pendulum. This issue is a result of shifts in how race/bigotry is presented to young, impressionable people, for years now. Not a sudden reaction like a pendulum swinging. It’s become deeply ingrained in corners of our society, and very possibly far larger corners than the left is willing to acknowledge.

The left has definitely overcorrected, so to speak. It’s up to creatures of the left, like Mounck, or Hughes, or Maher, to actively ensure it swings back to rational. They’re doing their parts, but the problem is it falls on deaf ears. Easier to just assume it’ll swing back all on its own, like folks like Mitch McConnell probably always expected of Trumpism. At least until he was hanging his red wave hopes on the likes of Herschel Walker and Doc Oz a couple of years back.

It’s a very real possibility that you’re right about the pendulum swinging, but very wrong about its form. Which might be Trump 2.0. It would be nice if we woke up to that possibility while there’s still time to ensure that’s not the case.
