I’ve long been about compromise at a level - some may want 15 weeks, I’m more in the post-20 week camp - with medical exceptions. Current events have to force skepticism about the workability of “medical exceptions”, regardless of when they happen in a pregnancy. We just saw it in TX - a woman desperately needed to evacuate a fetus due to complications that would jeopardize her ability to conceive in the future, or perhaps even be deadly. The state’s medical exception rules were deemed not to apply. She didn’t have time to wait for the appeal process. Her complications are on a biological rather than legal schedule. Not a match.

If she weren’t able to leave the state, she may have experienced catastrophic consequences. So I’m highly skeptical about medical exceptions - I think the risk of moms electively aborting fetuses in week 30 are all but 0. That’s not human nature. I think the risks of moms not being able to get crisis care are almost guaranteed in some instances, no matter what limit you put on abortions.

Human nature dictates we can trust moms and their docs. The pace of the legal system says we really can’t trust “medical exceptions.”
