...2020 showed was that, due to massive election-rigging and illegality by judiciary and executive branch officials at the state level, state legislatures would be well-advised to make clear that they have final say on how electors are appointed. They don't necessarily have to void the popular election, but they could change laws (as one state recently proposed) to say that the legislature certifies the election for president rather than the secretary of state and/or governer. Thus, if they deem an election to have been carried out contray to the laws they passed, they can refuse to certify it and instead vote on their own slate of electors.
