Ever watch Everybody Hates Chris? It was release in the aughts, and set in the early 80s. The notion of corporal punishment isn't just anachronistic, it is treated as a running joke throughout the series and that was 20 years ago. If you're stuck in a community where disrespecting authority is normalized, there are not a lot of good answers. Beating kids into submissions isn't a solution and moving somewhere else isn't always feasible.

It's the main reason why I spend so much on private school. It's not really about the education per se. It's more about growing up in an environment where people respect each other. I see what's going on in the public schools and I don't want my kid to have any part of it.
